Centre for Environment Education (CEE) and Indian Youth Climate Network (IYCN) with support from Heinrich Boell Stiftung (HBF) organised the local level Twelfth Conference of Youth (COY 12), India in Ahmedabad at CEE campus from November 4-6 th , 2016. The focal point of COY 12 was 'Sustainable Lifestyles'
The objective was to create awareness about climate change among youth, provided the platform to youth from all across India to learn about climate change, to share and provide recommendations on how we can develop to live in a sustainable manner and share experiences as well as create exchange dialogues. Collaborative climate-friendly projects and activities were also discussed.
The first day of COY was focused on building a foundation for climate action where interactive sessions were conducted on climate science along with a role play game to understand climate change negotiations. The second day was action focused where the participants were divided into different working groups to discuss and provide recommendations to develop a policy brief. The policy paper is the outcome document of COY 12 India which would also be presented during COP 22 at Marrakech. The third day was based on communicating climate change through theatre where the participants as part of their ‘Handprint' action, committed to making their lives more sustainable. The theatre session tried to explain how climate change issues could be effectively communicated through the medium interactive performing art.
Conference of Youth (COY) is an annual meet which takes place before the yearly UNFCCC, Conference of Parties (COP). Since 2005, ‘YOUNGO', youth NGOs network which represents youth at the official UN climate change negotiations, has been organising COY in the COP host country. About eight local COYs were held simultaneously in different parts of the world, out of which one was organised in Ahmedabad, by CEE and IYCN.
