Survey and technical report on ZLD concept in textile processing industries

South Gujarat Textile Processors Association (SGTPA) -Surat on behalf of Federation of All India Textile Processors Association (FAITPA)   appointed Industrial Pollution Prevention (IPP) Group of CEE to study and prepare a technical report on the different aspects of implementation of Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) concept in textile processing industries with respect to the draft order issued by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Government of India.

In order to address this issue and prepare a comprehensive report extensive literature survey was done. The survey was conducted throughout March, 2016. The matter was also discussed with experts and other stakeholders in textile industries. Thereafter, site visits at number of places in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu were carried out to learn the views of the manufacturers of textile industries specially the technical personnel involved in this matter.

It was gathered during field visits that ZLD is very good concept for the conservation of water and reduce pollution load however it may be implemented where the water supply is in scanty and no safe disposal facilities for treated waste water are available as implementation of ZLD system consumes huge power and thus contribute air pollution, global warming and may not be economically viable for small and medium scale textile units.

The report was submitted to SGTPA indicating pros and cons of concept and will definitely serve as a guide to all concerned i.e. policy makers, entrepreneurs and enforcing agencies for implementation of the ZLD concept.
