SSHE Bihar: Nirmal Gram Puraskar

CEE initiated work on School Sanitation and Hygiene Education (SSHE) project in the year 2005 with the support from UNICEF Patna. CEE was involved in the development of district plans of action via three district level consultation workshops, development of resource material for various target groups, training of master trainers at state level, teacher training workshops in three districts, development of concurrent monitoring and reporting systems, and demonstration and implementation of SSHE in 50 schools in Vaishali district.

CEE Bihar demonstrated the SSHE model in 5 schools of Panchayat Maeel of Bidupur Block and also in 45 schools of Vaishali District under Nirmal Gram Yojana. During the demonstration, hygiene promotion activities like formation of Bal Sansads, use of IEC material, sanitation rally, wall painting, hygiene competition, formation and training of mother teacher associations (MTA), use of toilets, handling and use of safe drinking water, safe disposal of garbage and personal hygiene etc. 

This year the Maeel Panchayat of Vaishali District has received the Nirmal Gram Puraskar for attaining full coverage of sanitation and hygiene facilities at household and school levels. The Nirmal Gram Puruskar is given to only those Blocks, Panchayats and Districts that become free from open defecation and also maintain a clean environment. CEE Bihar has worked in the Panchayat along with UNICEF, Bihar Education Project (BEP) and Public Health and Engineering Department (PHED).
