Teacher Trainings in J&K
Two teacher training workshops entitled “The Earthquake: Helping Children Cope”, emphasising earthquake preparedness, dealing with traumatized children, and the what, why, and how of environmental education, were organized for the school teachers of Chamkote and Tangdar Education Zones. The first workshop was organised during 7-8 August at Government Boys’ Middle School, Chitterkote, and the second one was organised during 9-10 August at Government Boys’ High School, Tangdar. The Chamkote workshop was attended by 31 teachers from 19 schools, while the Tangdar workshop was attended by 31 teachers from 26 schools.
The participation percentage of lady teachers in both the workshops was less as compared to other places, because there are fewer lady teachers in the Karnah tehsil. This is attributed to low education rate amongst women here.
The trainings discussed alternative teaching methodologies based on the new policy on education and the requirements of EE. Group discussions, role plays, street plays, competitions, arts & crafts, effective use of blackboard, story telling, poems, songs, pictures, etc. as methodologies were also discussed.
The workshops received a favourable feedback. Most teachers said that the workshop should have been of five-day duration. They also said that this was a first- of-its-kind programme in their area, and use of audio visual aids was seen for the first time. The Zonal Education Officer, Chamkote requested for organising two more similar workshops in the near future to cover the remaining schools.
