Training on Vermicomposting
CEE Kannur was invited by the Keezhallur Panchayat Authority to conduct a training programme on vermicomposting on 26 July 2006. Around 32 members from SHGs promoted by the Panchayat attended the programme.
The Panchayat President delivered the inaugural speech of the programme, emphasising the importance of organic farming and the role of biofertilizers in today’s agriculture. He stated that the development of the village is possible only through strengthening of the agricultural sector. He also persuaded the SHG members to utilize the available funds for action-oriented projects. The Village Extension Officer informed that Rs. 25,000/- is available with the Panchayat for utilisation in vermicomposting programmes.
Thereafter, Mr. Stephen Jose from CEE Kannur conducted a session on vermicomposting, covering the importance of organic agriculture, benefits of organic fertilizer, process of composting, construction of compost tank, expenses, marketing opportunities, etc. This was followed by an interactive session with the SHG members to clarify their doubts on the topic.
Along with this, the CEE Kannur team members Prasannan and Sajitha also shared the various livelihood generation activities and experiences of CEE Kannur with the members.
Later, the SHG members, along with CEE staff and Panchayath authorities, made a visit to Koorari – the village where CEE Kannur is working to develop model sustainable agriculture activities. The SHG members from Koorari, Sakunthala and Jyothi shared their experiences and learnings regarding vermicomposting with the team. It was a good platform for the Koorari villagers to interact with other villagers regarding the activities undertaken by them. It also helped to raise their confidence level.
