Workshops for District Level Waste Management Plan at Kannur
CEE Kannur and District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), Kannur together conducted workshops on waste management for the 83 Gram Panchayats and 9 Block Panchayats of Kannur district. The main objective of the workshops was to prepare a detailed waste management plan for Kannur district. The one-day workshops were conducted at four different locations during 16-21 August 2006. Representatives from all the 83 Gram Panchayats and 9 Block Panchayaths participated in these workshops.
In all the workshops, Mr.Shibu K Nair, the campaigner of Zero Waste Kovalam ─ a project run by an NGO called Thanal based at Thiruvanathapuram, made a good presentation on zero waste, and brought out the problems related to the current ways of disposing waste, as well as simple ways of managing waste at the point of origin itself. He also gave some points to be kept in mind when planning for a waste management system in each Panchayat, especially taking into account the kind and quantity of waste being generated there.
After the session and interaction with the resource person, the participants formed groups to discuss the formulation of a waste management plan for their respective Panchayat/Block. CEE Kannur team facilitated the discussions and provided guidelines to the participants to prepare the plan for each Panchayat. The compilation and final plan for the district level waste management programme will be formulated jointly by the CEE team and the DRDA team.
Mr.Thulaseedharan, District Coordinator for Total Sanitation, all Block Development Officers and CEE Kannur team led the activities.
