Anandshala-Model
Sustainable Schools in Madhya Pradesh
The Anandshala
project, which was successfully completed in Gujarat,
is being tried for replication elsewhere in the country.
The first state to begin this process is Madhya Pradesh.
The project aims to facilitate the development of model
sustainable schools through participatory visioning
exercises, local capacity building and provision of
support in terms of financial and technical resources,
to improve the quality of education and school infrastructure.
It is important to assess the realities
for adopting such a project in Madhya Pradesh (MP) and
hence UNICEF was approached CEE for a short-term need
assessment and perspective plan development for Anandshala
in M.P. UNICEF agreed to support this study in accordance
with the Rajya Shiksha Kendra (Department of Education,
Govt. of M.P.). The project districts would be UNICEF
focus districts in the state i.e. Jhabua and Bhind.
The three month project involves conducting workshops
at state and district level with education officials,
teachers, etc., school and village surveys, and exposure
visit.
The first workshop of the project
- 'SWOT Workshop on Quality Education' - was organized
during 7-8 July at Bhopal. Rajya Shiksha Kendra officials,
district education authorities from Jhabua and Bhind,
and UNICEF representatives attended the workshop. A
team from CEE Ahmedabad who were a part of Anandshala,
Gujarat came for the workshop to share their experiences
of the project in Gujarat and help in conducting the
SWOT exercise.
The workshop began with a presentation
on 'Quality Package' by Ms. Umasree of UNICEF. This
was followed by the presentation on the Anandshala project
, Gujarat by CEE staff. Several queries about the project
were convincingly answered. In the afternoon, the participants
worked on developing quality parameters through a role-play
on 'choosing a best school'. The group came out with
an exhaustive list of parameters which was quite comparable
to the quality criteria laid down in the 'quality package'.
Further in the workshop, the participants
undertook SWOT analysis of the districts they came from.
A school selection criterion was developed and the schedule
for activities ahead was also planned during the workshop.
