Observing International Biodiversity Day
CEE observed 'International
Biodiversity Day' on 22 May 2006, by organizing rallies
of school children, drawing competition, exhibition,
slide show, film show, etc. The programme was organized
in Ladakh, Uttranchal, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and attended
by over 1500 children, teachers, NGOs, etc.
Ladakh
CEE Himalaya observed the Biodiversity
Day with Ladakh by organizing rallies of students chanting
pro-conservation slogans, and holding placards displaying
the wild life of Ladakh, marched through the main market
areas of Leh and Kargil towns. Students of Government
Girls' and Boys' High Schools, Leh, presented two street
plays in Ladakh on this occasion. The girls enacted
a skit in which the animals conversed with each other
about their increasing environmental troubles due to
human activities.
During the event, the local plant
wealth of Ladakh was exhibited through the "Bio-resource
Exhibition" where local NGOs and research organizations
displayed their collection and herbal products. The
exhibition was inaugurated by the Executive Councilor,
Agriculture, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council
(LADHC). An informative slideshow on the breeding and
wintering of Black-necked Crane was presented by the
WWF Leh representative on this occasion. A documentary
on 'Vultures - The Endangered Species' was also screened
on the occasion.
Over 200 students, teachers, representatives
of research organizations, NGOs, and concerned citizens
were present on the occasion. CEE Himalaya, and Ladakh
Ecological Development Group (LEDeG) jointly organized
the event.
In Kargil, a procession of over 300
students and teachers from the local schools was flagged
off by the Deputy Commissioner of Kargil on 22 May 2006.
Different slogans were chanted to create awareness about
the importance of biodiversity for all life on earth.
The programme was organized in collaboration with LEDeG,
Kargil, some local NGOs, the National Human Development
Project (NHDP), the Wildlife Institute of India, Jammu
and Kashmir Wildlife Protection, and Jammu and Kashmir
Department of Education. A debate competition was also
organized in Kargil, in which over 200 students from
9 local schools participated. They expressed their opinion
on biodiversity and conservation related issues.
The celebrations continued on 23 May,
at Thiksey, a small town of Ladakh. More than 150 students
from Thiksey Government High School participated in
the quiz and on-the-spot painting competition, organized
on the occasion on the theme 'Biodiversity of Ladakh'.
The students and teachers were also shown a film on
snow leopard, which was followed, by a discussion on
local biodiversity and its importance.
Uttaranchal
CEE North observed Biodiversity Day at Khela, in Dhauladevi
Vikas Khand of Almora, Uttaranchal, in collaboration
with Dharti Society, an Almora-based NGO. Over 200 students
and teachers of Khela Gram Junior High School and Beena
Junior High School participated in a day-long programme
where a local folk group Dhad Lok Sanskritik Manch enacted
a play "Bakhat" on biodiversity, in Kumauni
language. Debate competition, slogan writing, quiz,
and greeting-card-making were the other activities carried
out on this occasion. 
Uttar Pradesh
CEE North joined the UP Directorate of Environment to
observe Biodiversity Day on 22 May. The programme was
inaugurated by Shri Ujjawal Raman Singh, Environment
Minister. CEE's resource material on biodiversity "Jai
Vividhata Sanrakshan" was distributed on the occasion.
Bihar
CEE Bihar, in association
with the Bihar State pollution Control Board (BSPCB),
organized a drawing competition on the occasion of Biodiversity
Day, at Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park, Patna. Around
600 students from various districts of the state participated
with zeal in the competition, which was organized in
three categories with three different themes - Importance
of Forests, Pollution and Solid Waste related Problems,
and Importance of Biodiversity.
