Summer Course on “Environment and Development: An introduction to sustainability and innovative strategies”

Centre for Environment Education, in collaboration with Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Pune, conducted this summer course for the second consecutive year. This five-credit, full time, three-week course was offered to postgraduate students of the University of Pune, NGO professionals and other interested individuals. The course aimed at explaining the concept of sustainability by focusing on a variety of issues related with aspects of environment and development such as water, biodiversity, energy, industry, agriculture, population, traffic and transport and other urban concerns. Examples of innovative thinking, experiments and strategies for striving towards sustainability were provided through lectures , readings, field visits and films. Students undertook various assignments, some of them web-based, and a project.

Students conducted a market survey to understand the diversity of vegetables, fruits, flowers, etc. and their inflow from various places to consumer areas like the urban centre of Pune.
Ralegan Siddhi, a village developed on the model of sustainability. The E and D course helped students understand the importance of citizens and collective action in moving towards sustainable development.
The question that arises now is, "what could be the mode of development in future for Ralegan Siddhi to follow the model of sustainability?"
