Sarus Watch
Sundarvan’s camping unit organized a Sarus watch at the end of June, 2006. A group of 48 bird enthusiasts went to Narda, Traj and Pariyej wetlands in Kheda district. This area has been a traditional stronghold of Sarus cranes and the group was fortunate to see about 80 of them. Other wetland birds were also to be seen in plenty. Colonies of ibis, cormorants and storks were observed on the trees in the Traj village lake. Children were specially fascinated by the intricate design of Weaver bird nests. The group also had interactions with local villagers and farmers about their views on Sarus and what they mean to them. It was a good example of sharing of urban and rural views on such issues. At the end of the day it was agreed that if Sarus Cranes have to be preserved then people must come forward and adopt a pair and pay the affected farmer the requisite compensation. |
