of Karnataka. This programme aims at capacity building
the teachers to teach the science concepts from environmental
perspectives in an effective manner and create awareness
among the school children on the concepts and issues
related to science and environment, through activities
and action projects.
As part of this project, ten 2-days
teacher-training programmes for 414 teachers from 5
districts (Bidar, Bijapur, Dharwad, Gadag and Bijapur)
of North Karnataka were held during 28th June to 30th
July 2004.
During the training programme, teachers
were oriented to the basic concepts on Environment;

held discussion on topics - Water, Soil, Forest and
Wildlife, Climate and Weather, etc. The training was
carried out through various approaches like Lecture

given a kit containing teachers' manual, water conservation
chart, and other stationary materials that help in conducting
educational activities in schools. After the training,
the teachers were directed to implement the EE activities
in schools.
To get an idea of the level of implementation
of activities and action projects in schools, CEE team
along with representatives of Infosys Foundation visited
several schools in October 2004. During the visit, the
team members interacted with the teachers, head of the
school, Management Committee members and students to
evaluate the level of understanding of concepts related
Science and Environment explained during the training
programme. The team observed that the implementing schools
have undertaken many activities on Science and Environment.
Most of the teachers expressed that the activity mode
of teaching had helped students to understand the concepts
more clearly. It has also helped the teachers to improve
their classroom teaching. Suggestions and guidance were
given to the school members for further implementation
of the activities and action projects
