Workshop to develop Sustainable Development Strategy for South Asia: Youth Perspective

South Asia Youth Environment Network (SAYEN) in collaboration with CEE India, UNEP and CEE Sri Lanka organized the inception workshop for preparation of Sub-regional Sustainable Development Strategy (SSDS) for South Asia: Youth Perspective from 24-27 January 2006 at Subodhi, Sri Lanka. 10 youth representatives from SAYEN member organizations in Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka attended the workshop.

The workshop objectives included: Capacity building of selected youth members of South Asia Youth Environment Network (SAYEN) on environment and sustainable development; Development of the content outline and the format for the 'SDS for South Asia; A Youth Perspective; document; and Development of the work plan including roles and responsibilities of participants.

The key SD challenges identified during the workshop include: Waste management; Water: Accessibility, availability and politics; Governance: unplanned urban growth and corruption; Poor Quality of Education; HIV/AIDS Infection and Substance Abuse; Lack of regional cooperation and understanding and Resource degradation. This would be the basis for SSDS development.

Mr. W.R.M.S. Wickramasinghe, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, was invited to give the valedictory address for the workshop. During his valedictory address, Mr. Wikramasinghe appreciated CEE Sri Lanka activities and proposed that CEE Sri Lanka become the Centre of Excellence in Environment Education for the Ministry of Environment in Sri Lanka. He also invited CEE Sri Lanka for a discussion on activities that could be jointly conducted in the country.
