Stockholm Junior Water Prize

CEE observed World Water Day on 22nd March through the National launch of the Stockholm Junior Water Prize (SJWP) for India. CEE has been appointed as the National Organizer of the SJWP in India by Stockholm Water Foundation. It will be for the first time that India will be participating in the Award for 2005.

The SJWP is a prestigious international prize, awarded annually to young scientists for outstanding projects aimed at improving livelihoods and ecosystem health in the water environment. The award enjoys Royal Patronage by HRH Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden. The SJWP seeks to raise young individuals' engagement in the common water environment, on local as well as global levels. The contestants can compete a practical project in the field of science and technology, natural and social sciences using innovative development methods and approaches to solve water problems.

The SJWP gives youth the opportunity to compete with the best of their contemporaries at a global level. They also have the chance to meet and interact with other international group with similar abilities and interests. Since the SJWP competition is held during the World Water Week in Stockholm each August, the SJWP awardees also have the opportunity to meet with the most prominent water scientists and researchers from all over the world.

The entries for the year 2005 are invited from all over the India, which will be scrutinized through a national committee for selection of a project for the International Prize. The contest is open to students not older than 20 years, and who are still attending secondary high school or similar levels. Projects can be carried out by an individual student or group of students (no more than 3).

The first prize winner in a National Stockholm Junior Water Prize contest will be eligible to participate in the international contest in Stockholm, Sweden this year in August. The international SJWP winner receives USD 5,000 award and a blue crystal sculpture in the shape of a water droplet.

Schools are invited to participate in the SJWP. Individual students or group of students can work on theoretical and applied science projects as well as projects aiming at solving community water problems. However, it is essential that all projects use a research-oriented approach, which means that they use scientifically accepted methodologies for investigation, experimentation, monitoring and reporting the results, including statistical analysis.

The competition for the SJWP award is open to projects aimed at improving the quality of life through improvement of water quality, water resource management, water protection or water and wastewater treatment. The projects can apply these criteria, for example, by focusing on water environment problems or improving water management in schools, communities or water basins.

The deadline of submission of project is 30 May 2005. For details of the contest please contact
