CEE in the committee to `Environmentalize' the textbooks of Karnataka

Dr. Shailaja Ravindranath, Programme Coordinator, CEE Southern Regional Cell has been appointed as the Chair of the textbook committee of Directorate of State Education Research and Training (DSERT), Government of Karnataka to revise the curriculum of the existing environment subject of Standards 1 to 4, in the light of the recent Supreme Court Judgment to introduce environment as a compulsory subjects.

The committee includes selected teachers from primary, higher primary and high school; representatives from District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), and representatives from the textbook division of DSERT.

Currently, CEE is reviewing the contents of the textbooks, suggesting the environmental concepts to be introduced, removed, modified, adapted etc. Several meetings are being held by the textbook committee so that the work can be completed by the end of this year. The committee is ensuring that the syllabus for Environmental Education (EE) suggested by NCERT is being followed and ensuring that the information is specifically relevant to the state, at the same time taking care not to increase the curriculum load. The effort is also to link the concepts at different levels so that there is continuity.

In addition to this, a separate box on "competency" has been introduced in three to four points in each lesson so as to enable the teacher and students to know the learning objective of each chapter. Some general information like What is EE? and also some general instructions on the approaches of teaching EE has been given in the introductory pages of each book, to help teachers to adopt relevant methodologies while teaching.

The Karnataka DSERT would introduce the revised textbooks in the next academic year.
