Value-based Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Education in Schools

The United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) has sanctioned a project titled " Capacity Building for Values-based Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Education in Schools", under the "Water for Asian Cities Programme". The project aims to introduce values-based Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Education in four project cities of Madhya Pradesh - Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior and Jabalpur, and also selected schools in slum areas of Savarkundla, Gujarat This will be done by setting up Water and Sanitation Classrooms in selected schools and capacity-building of the concerned schools and other educational institutions.

The Water and Sanitation (WatSan) Classrooms being set up under the project aim to create an understanding among the children about the local water situation, the water cycle, the varying climatic conditions in different parts of our country and the world, life in water, hydrology, ecology, the necessity of water protection both on small and large scale, and different methods of local water treatments.

The methodology would involve CEE developing and implementing a number of school-based outputs and activities using a cluster approach, and in cooperation with other partners including water and sanitation utilities/service providers and possibly community-based organizations involved in WatSan education.

The project implementation has started in Madhya Pradesh, though the CEE Madhya Pradesh Office.
