and Hygiene Education in Schools
The United Nations Human Settlements
Program (UN-Habitat) has sanctioned a project titled
" Capacity Building for Values-based Water, Sanitation
and Hygiene Education in Schools", under the "Water
for Asian Cities Programme". The project aims to
introduce values-based Water, Sanitation and Hygiene
Education in four project cities of Madhya Pradesh -
Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior and Jabalpur, and also selected
schools in slum areas of Savarkundla, Gujarat This will
be done by setting up Water and Sanitation Classrooms
in selected schools and capacity-building of the concerned
schools and other educational institutions.
The Water and Sanitation (WatSan)
Classrooms being set up under the project aim to create
an understanding among the children about the local
water situation, the water cycle, the varying climatic
conditions in different parts of our country and the
world, life in water, hydrology, ecology, the necessity
of water protection both on small and large scale, and
different methods of local water treatments.
The methodology would involve CEE
developing and implementing a number of school-based
outputs and activities using a cluster approach, and
in cooperation with other partners including water and
sanitation utilities/service providers and possibly
community-based organizations involved in WatSan education.
The project implementation has started
in Madhya Pradesh, though the CEE Madhya Pradesh Office.
