Sanitation and Hygiene Education Programme in Schools

CEE, with support from UNICEF, Zilla Panchayat and KRWSSA (Karnataka Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency) has taken up a project "Educational Programme on Health and Hygiene practices" in schools of Tumkur, Chikmagalur, Gulbarga, Mysore and Kolar, districts in Karnataka. The programme involved a series of residential teacher training programmes covering about 2500 teachers and a series of three-day Children's camps in schools, covering 5200 students to promote better health and hygiene practices among school children.

Teacher Training Programmes
This programme targeted at Higher primary school teachers and aims at capacity building the teachers to create awareness on health and hygienic practices among the school children, help motivate children to use and maintain sanitation facilities at schools, inculcate better hygienic practices and make the students to understand the importance of keeping the school and home premises clean.

As part of the project, CEE has developed several education materials on school sanitation programmes such as activity based manual for teachers; water conservation chart, game chart on hygiene practices, 2 posters, 2 sets of banners etc. These educational materials were distributed to all the teachers who participated in the training programme.

During the two-day residential programme, teachers were oriented to various aspects of health and hygiene education. In order to communicate effectively various approaches were used, which would help them in turn train students. These include demonstration activities, lecture sessions, field visits, slide shows, educational games, group work, screening of films etc. Towards the end of the programme, teachers developed an action plan to implement the programme in their respective schools.

Children's Camps
As a part of this project, a total of 104 Children's camps were also organized in Tumkur , Chikmagalur, Gulbarga and Mysore districts of Karnataka. About 5200 students of higher primary school participated in the 3-day camp conducted in the respective schools. During the camp, several relevant approaches were made to effectively communicate the messages of water, sanitation, health and hygiene like demonstration, games, hands on experiences, survey and analysis, field visits, awareness campaigns, screening of movies etc. Several educational materials on water, health and hygienic practices such as 'Act Now' booklet, booklet on songs, stickers, badge, game charts, etc. also distributed during the camp.
