Developing Master Education Plan for Zoos in India

The Central Zoo Authority (CZA), Delhi has identified CEE as the agency in India to pilot the project of designing and developing a Master Zoo Education Plan for zoos in India, over the next two years. Various activities proposed include developing visitors profile, understanding the existing activities of the zoos, training needs assessment, development of publications, etc.

The Central Zoo Authority (CZA) was set up in 1992 as a statutory body under the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India. It is mandatory for all zoos in India to be recognized by this Authority.

The various activities proposed under this are:

  • Developing Visitor study profile/questionnaire/survey form for the diverse target audiences visiting zoos to design and develop effective and appropriate educational and interpretation programmes for the different target groups visiting zoos
  • Appraisal visits and meetings with few zoos to arrive at a picture of current status and felt needs in this area
  • Conducting Regional Workshops involving Zoo Directors and key stakeholders
  • Carrying out training needs assessment
  • Documentation and Reporting
  • Designing and developing Publications highlighting and giving a detailed menu of the various kinds of education and interpretation programmes, along with a directory for zoos.
  • A small booklet would be developed which would provide case studies of successfully running educational and interpretation programmes in various zoos.
