| The XIX Commonwealth Games are scheduled to be held in New Delhi from 3-14 October 2010. As the host of the Commonwealth Games (CWG), the Govt. of Delhi has committed itself to hosting “Green Games” by inducing behavioral change towards low carbon practices. |
Centre for Environment Education (CEE) is facilitating in creating responsible green citizens to promote low carbon practices under the Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF), Govt. of India (GoI) and Global Environment Facility (GEF), United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in partnership with the civil society partners of the Small Grants Programme (SGP). The project Creating Green Citizens as Champions to link with the MoEF GoI GEF UNDP project on ‘Low Carbon Campaign for Commonwealth Games 2010, New Delhi’ aims at:
- Sequestering carbon through plantations in schools, colleges, villages and common places in the villages/cities along the Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR) Route through SGP partners to neutralize the excess carbon emissions during the Commonwealth Games
- Create awareness on low carbon practices and sustainable lifestyles by involving schools children, citizens at large, institutions and SGP partners in the cities along the Queen’s Baton Relay Route in India
| The project is being carried out in around 70 cities all over India with the help of NGO partners in these cities. CEE is tying up with schools, colleges, universities, farmer groups, corporate firms, resident welfare associations and many other institutions in these cities for carrying out the following activities: |
| 1. |
Plantations in and around the campus of these institutions along with care and maintenance of the planted saplings. |
| 2. |
Participating in training on ‘low carbon practices’ and sustainable lifestyles through a toolkit developed by CEE. The toolkit focuses not only on theoretical aspects of Climate Change but on quantitative data showing the effects of our carbon emitting lifestyles in terms of carbon emissions and the burden on our pockets. |
| 3. |
Rallies along the QBR route in all these cities spreading the message of low carbon lifestyles. |
| The project aims to plant more than 1,00,000 saplings, each locale-specific, keeping the local biodiversity in view. More than 10,000 participants will be trained to adopt low carbon practices in their daily lives with participation from around 1000 institutions. |
