Introductory Booklet on National Mission for a Green India

From 11th June to 12th July 2010, CEE conducted a series of seven Public Consultations on the National Mission for a Green India (Green India Mission or GIM). Organized on behalf of the Ministry of Environment & Forests, these consultations were aimed at gathering comments and feedback from general public, civil society groups , researchers, activists, institutions, and other stakeholders to fine tune the Ministry’s draft version of the mission document and to help the Ministry get a wider base of public support and input in formulating its action plans under this mission. Hon’ble Minister for Environment & Forests Shri Jairam Ramesh chaired all seven public consultations, held at Guwahati, Pune, Dehradun, Jaipur, Visakhapatnam, Bhopal, and Mysore. CEE prepared and distributed 11 language versions of the draft mission document and is now collecting and consolidating feedback from across the country, via post, email and other channels, to finalize the report. The documents are also available on Ministry’s website (http://moef.nic.in).

Concurrent meetings of senior foresters and other officials from key government departments were also held at these locations, which were steered by Director General (Forests), MoEF. These meetings helped to focus on the operational, financial, and inter-agency cooperation issues related to the proposed mission.

The GIM is one of the eight Missions under the National Action Plan on Climate Change announced by the Prime Minister. It aims at improving the country’s forest cover both qualitatively and quantitatively, thereby increasing the carbon-sequestration potential of our forests, so as to enhance the country’s resilience to impacts of climate change. In its afforestation and forest protection activities the mission aims to involve a variety of stakeholders from all sections of society.
