Pick Right/ Kaun Banega Bharat Ka Paryavaran Ambassador

The Pick Right/ Kaun Banega Bharat Ka Paryavaran Ambassador Campaignwas launched on World Environment Day (WED) 2008 by Honorable President of India, Smt Pratibha Devisingh Patil. The theme and slogan for the World Environment Day in 2008 was ‘CO2: Kick the Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Economy’.

The theme  announced by UNEP was adapted by CEE for the  Ministry of Environment and Forests to ‘CO2, Pick Right! Towards Sustainability and Growth’ to make it more relevant in the Indian context.  Pick Right is a positive message which encourages each individual to reflect on lifestyle choices which matter in dealing with Climate Change. It is a step towards raising awareness that by making the right choices we can contribute towards sustainability and growth.

The campaign was conducted in 15 languages in 200,000 schools in India. The campaign kit consisted of  a booklet, poster (set of 2), two sticker-sheets, a post-card, a stencil all of which cam packaged in an envelope.

Over 200 meetings, training, workshops were held in various locations of the country. This involved one to one interaction and discussions with teachers, representatives of non governmental organizations associated with schools and children themselves followed by voting. CEE’s 7 regional cells and the UNDP- Global Environment Facility- Small grants programme network of over 100 NGOs made this large-scale implementation possible.

The schools were also supposed to conduct a poll to select the Paryavaran Ambassador. This is perhaps the first unique election ever conducted in India where children have been asked to voice their choice for an ambassador who would be a spokesperson on the right choices for sustainability.

The process involved the school coming to a consensus and voting for 1 Paryavaran Ambassador. The name was to be filled in on the post card provided in the kit. Votes were collated at CEE and Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam emerged as the children’s choice of Paryavaran Ambassador. He was felicitated by Shri Jairam Ramesh, Hon’ble Minister of State for Environment and Forests, Government of India at a function in New Delhi. The programme is an initiative of CEE in partnership with ArcelorMittal for Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India.
