Natural Resource-based Livelihoods of the Rural Poor

Sustainable livelihoods (SL) are the capability of people to make a living and improve their quality of life without jeopardizing the livelihood options of others, either now or in the future (UNDP).

A livelihood comprises the capabilities, assets and activities required for a means of living. A livelihood is sustainable when it can cope with and recover from stresses and shocks and maintain or enhance its capabilities and assets both now and in the future, while not undermining the natural resource base (DFID).

Objectives

This workshop tried to understand and strengthen the role of education for enhancing sustainability of the natural resource-based livelihoods of the rural poor. The specific objectives that the workshop sought to achieve were:

  • Share understanding of the role of education in enhancing sustainability of the livelihoods of the rural poor
  • Showcase best practices in education contributing to sustainability of rural livelihoods
  • Articulate the educational priorities for contributing to sustainability of livelihoods of the rural poor
  • Suggest strategies for taking action by different players at various levels for the Decade

Planned Outputs

A common understanding of the scope and role of education in enhancing sustainability of livelihoods of the rural poor. This will be articulated as a concept paper.

A sharing of experiences (of governments, non-governmental organizations, networks, funding agencies and international institutions) of the ways in which education has provided value-addition to programmes for sustainable livelihoods and vice versa. This will be documented as a compendium.

A strategy and action plan for strengthening the contribution of education to enhancing sustainable livelihoods in the rural poverty context. This will be presented as a strategy and in a plan of action document.
