 4. Ideas to Action - Policies and Practices for Sustainable Development

Objective
This workshop will discuss ways to influence policy planners and development practitioners to integrate alternative strategies of sustainable development into mainstream development processes.

Framework
The workshop will discuss the development of innovative approaches for sustainable development in terms of

  • Programmes, practices and policies
  • Process of refining, modeling, testing and then mainstreaming innovative approaches
  • Integrating knowledge of these approaches at every level of society
  • Involving decision makers, policy planners, practitioners, students and the community

The Need for Education for a Sustainable Future
The workshop will focus on awareness, educational processes and linkages that promote sustainable decision-making at all levels of society, keeping in view the fact that Education for Sustainable Development is a dynamic concept that aims for empowerment through providing knowledge, skills, perspectives and values to all potential decision-makers.

Issues to be Discussed

  • ESD is more concerned with the content and purpose of education
  • With improving the capacity of the people to address E&D issue
  • Sustainable Development is as much modeled as taught, (demonstration/ dissemination)
  • Discuss “Spaces for Learning” (discuss methods/ demonstration modelling, and opportunities for learning)

Agenda

The workshop will examine case studies, analyse learnings and suggest processes by which sustainable development programmes, policies and practices can be made widely acceptable.

The workshop will look at the linkages needed to take knowledge and skills into formal and informal education, with special emphasis on decision makers and policy planners as well as practitioners.

Paper Presentations and Discussion

The presentations will outline the potential and scope for E&C in each sector; identify the present status, key stakeholders and target groups and capacity building needs; touch upon best practices and suggest strategies for those sectors.

  • Agro-ecology
  • Natural Resource Management
  • Water Resource Management
  • Agricultural Practices in India
  • Coastal resources Management
  • Livestock and Environment
  • Industry and Environment

Output
A strategy paper for action in the Decade, with recommendations on influencing policy and supporting decision making for Sustainable Development by

  • Building capacity through communication, information and expert support for sustainable development in all sectors of natural resource management
  • Educating through modeling Sustainable Development.
