UNICEF Maharashtra, ACWADAM and CEE are developing a Youth Water Stewardship program which aims to reach out to about 3000 colleges in 13 districts. The programme, initiated earlier this year will be implemented for a period of about 3 years, and will motivate and engage youth to take up water conservation activities at home and in the community.

The role includes:

  1. Close coordination with the district nodal officer, University nodal officers, program officer, district NSS team and youth in Mumbai and Palghar district of Maharashtra.

The strategy is to have a multi stakeholders approach through an integrated model directed to address immediate causes with support from HDFC BANK and co-financing funding (both in-cash and in-kind) from the state and central government funds, NGOs/Companies contributions as waste management agencies (WMAs), by establishing an Swachh Sustainable Business Models (SSBMs) for improved dry & plastic waste management by establishing – DRY WASTE Material Recovery Facilities as Swachh Centres (SCs), in line with the emerging MOEFCC GOI “National Resource Efficiency Policy” and the “National Materials Recycling Policy”.

In the context of increasing water scarcity competitive demands and widespread pollution, water resources have become one of the critical imperatives for livelihood. Drinking and Domestic water needs get the first priority among the various demands of water. “Kanthal Pvt. Ltd. and CEE” with a theme of water conservation, making use of waste water and beautification of the pond as a physical fitness spot as well as a place for environmental protection activities decided to take up the pledge to transform Bada Talab in to lively water bodies with restored aquatic ecology and saving the environment of the town. As untreated sewerage from the neighboring area enters the pond through the connected drainage systems, daily deposition of organic and inorganic material gives rise to eutrophication and decomposition of the same by a natural way is resulting into sludge accumulation. The project is purely focused upon the reinstating the natural ecosystem and making the water quality adequate to support life, with a clear and straightforward objective to remove all harmful aquatic weeds, increase the Dissolved Oxygen (DO) level, reduce Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), increase the depth of the water body, significant reduction of nutrient elements (like Nitrogen and Phosphorus access of which is harmful for aqua life to balance the ecology, and plantation of Phyllostachys pubescens or another equivalent for natural air purification and CO2 absorption. Developing the surrounding area of the pond to prevent it from illegal encroachment and making the space available for health and fitness and also presenting the pond as physical fitness spot as well as place for environmental protection activities.

CEE Urban Programme

CEE Urban Programme works in the areas of sustainable urban development including biodiversity, water, energy, air quality, transportation, road safety, climate change, waste management, etc through collaborative approach such as participation, education and communication for orienting the urban development processes on the pathways of sustainable development. CEE Urban Programme group designs and implements innovative programmes and projects to demonstrate such initiatives along with the community and key stakeholders.

It has been implementing projects on promotion of sustainable urban transportation, air quality management, knowledge management for urban groundwater and watershed, plan for urban resilience, improving road safety, interpretation programme for urban biodiversity, sustainable waste management, citizens’ participation in urban governance, education programme for school and college, recently and in past. These projects are designed to target both at local as well as national levels.

Pune Air Quality Project

CEE has undertaken initiatives on air quality in Pune including education on air quality and AQI at educational institutions, communication for air quality management and early warning system for air quality with health advisories, dissemination of AQI advisories to health care facilities, collaborative rapid studies on air quality and health, supporting local government on air quality management and outreach and facilitating dialogue with key stakeholders and citizen groups.

Project Associate, Air Quality Project

The project associate will be engaged in the projects on urban sustainability including air quality, health, climate change and related themes. The main role of the project associate will be to undertake and support implementation of activities and studies on air quality management, health and IEC related aspects.

The tasks involve

  • Contributing to development/adaptation of education materials and resources, administer outreach to education institutes, conduct educational programmes and session for school students and youths in universities and colleges, support in organizing teacher orientation workshops, orienting and managing volunteers and interns.
  • Support in setting health risk communication based on AQI based early warning system for sensitive groups including children, elderly, people with air related illnesses and exposed groups through school systems, colleges, health care centers and medical professionals.

Project Summary

As part of the ongoing partnership, it is planned to carry out systematic plantation
across five locations (Bangalore, Chennai, Gurgaon, Hyderabad, and Pune),
contributing to climate change mitigation action. CEE advocates for plantation of
local shrubs and trees which are suitable for the site’s environment and climate. In
addition to plantation, awareness activities on climate change adaptation and
mitigation actions are to be executed.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Develop and steer the action plan, synchronizing with the project framework
  • Implement, monitor and evaluate the project activities, further ensuring followup actions after plantation
  • Ensure that the project meet its objectives, budget & timelines are adhered to
    and beneficiary experience is of high quality
  • Carry out field visits for on-ground implementation activities and monitoring

About the Project:

Centre for Environment Education is implementing a project with Sparsh Social Foundation in Kagaz Naagar and surrounding villages on “Management of Paper, Plastic and Dry Waste’. The project aims to minimize negative impacts and risks to environment and to human health with regards to dry waste management and promoting ZERO WASTE MODEL APPROACH - zero landfills, zero paper and plastic burning, zero Emissions, and Zero wastages in Dry waste management in India.

The strategy is to have a multi stakeholder approach through an integrated model directed to address the key concerns by establishing a systemic approach for improved dry & plastic waste segregation, collection, transportation, processing and disposal, in line with the emerging MOEFCC GOI “National Resource Efficiency Policy” and the “National Materials Recycling Policy”.
