NGC-Nagaland

Since 2002, CEE has been the Resource Agency (RA) in 15 states and two UTs for this countrywide awareness programme initiated and funded by MoEF. The NGC Secretariat is located at CEE South. In each state a local organisation is designated as Nodal Agency (NA). NGC aims at spreading environmental awareness among school children through eco-club activities, and through children in society at large.

At a meeting with the Nodal Officer (NO), Nagaland Pollution Control Board, at Guwahati, the NO suggested an NE regional meeting of the concerned officers to share experiences and learning and prepare a better road map based thereon. The CEE-NE Team met the NO at Dimapur, to discuss eco-club activities, refresher training of teachers-in-charge, exposure visits for eco-club members, development of resource materials, celebration of various environment-related days and timely submission of utilisation certificates to MoEF.

Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB) and CEE-NE organised a day-long programme at Dimapur, in which 112 eco-club members and eight teachers from seven schools of Dimapur district participated. A welcome address by the Chairman, NPCB, was followed by an introductory note by Member Secretary and Nodal Officer (NGC), NPCB. The Minister, Forests Ecology Environment & Wildlife, Nagaland inaugurated the session by releasing an NGC-Nagaland Pamphlet highlighting the activities of eco-clubs in the state.

A scientist from NPCB made a presentation on Wetlands: Definition, Functions and Values, elaborating the significance and values of wetlands in the total biodiversity of an area. It was followed by an interactive session with eco-club members on Wetlands of Nagaland. One session consisted of a field visit to the Rajapukhuri Pond, where eco-club members observed and identified wetland flora and fauna and learnt about the importance of the ecosystem.
