Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion Programme through Schools in Chhattisgarh:

WaterAid India-Regional Office West (ROW) supported Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion Programme in this period focused on creating infrastructure in schools; training and capacity building of students towards hygiene and sanitation practices. The programme continued in 21 schools in and around Raipur.

Separate sanitation blocks were constructed in Manabasti, Dharampura, Temri and Fundhar Government Schools. Each Sanitation block has been fitted with force-lift hand pump, ensuring water supply facility without depending on electricity.

One new bore well hand pump was installed at Bhatagaon Government School. All the projects schools were provided compost pit, kitchen garden/soakpit. All the water sources of the schools have been tested, water quality was found to be potable/drinkable. None of the sources were found to be contaminated. Wall slogan writing and painting in all the schools have been completed, Ropes and Ladders game has been painted on floor in all the schools. Students and teachers participated in World Toilet Day event in Bhopal and presented hygiene practices messages through songs and posters.

Swachta Clubs have been formed in all the project schools. Training programme for members of these clubs was organized in each school. The focus of the training programme was hygiene and sanitation practices to be followed under various samitis of swachta club—jal samiti, bhojan samiti, vyaktigat swachta samiti, sauchalaya/shala parisar swachta samiti; how to involve other students in the samiti work, rotation of members under various samitis to share the responsibilities with other students etc.
