NGC-Meghalaya

Since 2002, CEE has been the Resource Agency (RA) in 15 states and two UTs for this countrywide awareness programme initiated and funded by MoEF. The NGC Secretariat is located at CEE South. In each state a local organisation is designated as Nodal Agency (NA). NGC aims at spreading environmental awareness among school children through eco-club activities, and through children in society at large.

Four district-level TTWs for teachers-in-charge of eco-clubs were organised in the state as part of the NGC programme. All of them were organised by the Social Forestry Division of the respective districts, which is the District Implementation and Management agency. The CEE-NE team facilitated the workshops, conducting sessions on the NGC programme, its Status in the North-East, the role of teachers in forming eco-clubs, methods of EE, eco-club activities and how to develop project concepts for the Eco clubs. The teachers also participated in games and activities that oriented them to innovative methods in EE. The workshops additionally provided opportunities to both the teachers and the implementing agencies to discuss the problems they faced in the field.

At Tura, West Garo Hills District, 25 teachers from the district participated in a two-day workshop. The teachers made presentations on local issues such as jhum cultivation and deforestation, solid waste management, landslides, unemployment and illiteracy, water scarcity, pollution and loss of biodiversity. The CEE team helped them identify possible solutions and the role of eco clubs in implementing them. At Nongpoh, Ri Bhoi District, 18 teachers participated in a programme that included, besides the routine sessions conducted by the CEE team, a session on the environmental problems of the district. The TTW at Jowai, Jaintia Hills District, had participation by 24 teachers. In West Khasi Hills District 39 teachers took part.
