EE in SchoolsEnvironmental Education in Schools of Andhra Pradesh:
CEE-AP implemented EESAP project with support from Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), Government of Andhra Pradesh, in about 1556 schools. It was partnered by 33 NGOs organised into 39 clusters, covering all districts of the state.
The objective of EESAP was to develop a model to spread environmental education in schools nation-wide, which is systematic and self-sustaining. The main components of EESAP are development of educational materials, capacity building, review meetings, discussions of EE activities in School Complexes, implementation of environment education activities at school, continuous support through school visits and annual events.
Teachers’ manuals for the project have been developed keeping in mind the curriculum of classes. Manuals have information for teachers and activities for the students that will help integrate EE with the regular curriculum. A video has been made with support from EESAP schools, showing students doing activities from the manual. This is intended as an aid for the teacher orientation programmes, and has been distributed to all EESAP cluster NGOs, the SSA and to the District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs).
The wall magazine Parisarallo Pathalu (Learning from our Surroundings) has been developed and distributed to about 13,500 upper primary schools in the state through the SSA. The magazine is closely linked to the lessons in the science curriculum.
Orientation programmes on EESAP for teachers were conducted in all clusters. These focused on familiarising teachers with the activities in the manual through a hands-on approach.
Each EESAP teacher is expected to run year-long EE activities in classes. Community participation is built into the activities. These include surveys, demonstrations and experiments, which involve members of the community as informants and knowledge resources. At the end of the academic year, the cluster schools conduct events at which the children present their learnings back to the community.
